Zone 02 Happenings

Our second Suffolk County Association of School Nurses (SCASN) meeting of this school year was held on January 27, 2026. The meeting was held at Sequoya High School, located at 760 Waverly Avenue in Holtsville. Despite the snow and frigid temperatures, we had 23 school nurses in attendance. We currently have 59 paid members in SCASN. Our current SCASN Executive Board members are:

At our January meeting, we once again provided our attendees with a hot, catered meal. We had two presentations on mental health and well being. Dr. Fagan, Central Islip Medical Director, presented on mental health in the student population and Eileen Petre, MS, School Psychologist & Wendy Rothman, Psy.D, School Psychologist, presented on building resiliency in mental health.

We raised $110 by selling raffles for a Valentines themed lotto scratch off. The winner was our current president, Bernadette Murray. The raffle proceeds go towards a scholarship to be awarded to a student who will be pursuing nursing, in the school district of our next EISN winner. So far this year, we have raised a total of $241.72 towards our goal.

I once again presented information on the EISN award and gave a deadline of February 6, 2026 to submit nomination forms to SCASN. This will give us time to review them and submit a winner to NYSASN by the February 22, 2026 deadline. I spoke about the new NYSASN website and how valuable, informative and useful it is. I gave recognition to our wonderful NYSASN Communications Chair, Angela O’Leary. I once again presented the benefits of belonging to both NYSASN and NASN and I encouraged all SCASN members to join if they are not current members.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Our presenter will be Cathleen Davis, Diabetes Educator from Good Samaritan Hospital. We also have secured a rep from GVOKE, Christina Pisani, who will give a brief presentation and will cover the cost of the hot meal for the meeting. We look forward to another successful evening of learning and collaborating together!
