Dear NYSASN members,
It has been one full year since Covid-19 entered our world and turned it upside down. In this past year, we have faced challenges never seen before in school nursing. As always, school nurses faced the challenges head on, and have proven to be valued members of the districts’ pandemic response teams. Our communities have grown to see us with a new perspective—we are experts in the fields of infection control and contact tracing. Many of us are administering Covid tests or vaccines.
As NYSASN board members gathered via Zoom to prepare to advocate for classifying school nurses as class 1a recipients of the covid vaccine, the state designated school staff members as eligible. Many of us have already completed our series and practice with an increased level of confidence.
In anticipation of continuation of the downward trend of new Covid cases, NYSASN is planning to offer its acclaimed School Nurse Orientation in person this year in August, at the Welch Allyn Lodge at Hillrom in Skaneateles. Details will be forthcoming. We also plan to have our annual conference in November in person, if guidelines permit.
I hope you have taken advantage of some of the opportunities published on our Facebook page and on NASN’s NurseNet community, such as the ability to earn an AED for your school through the Louis J. Acampora Foundation. We will continue to post educational and other opportunities as we become aware of them, so make sure to check out these forums often.
We are very happy to introduce two new zone representatives—Kathy Varieur from zone 5, and Anne Pawlowski from zone 12. We are still looking for zone representatives from zones 6,7,8 and 9. Please contact me at email@example.com if you would like to join us!
NYSASN wants to maintain relationships with members in the zones that do not have zone representatives. Our current zone reps have graciously “adopted” the members in those zones, making sure they received notifications and pertinent communications. Thank you to those zone reps!
Please continue to submit nominations for NYSASN’s Everyday Hero Recognition. We are honored to recognize school nurses who go above and beyond in their daily practice.
NASN’s election of officers will begin on March 15th and will close on April 15th. Please check out the website https://www.nasn.org/nasn/about-nasn/elections for voting details and candidate information.
Finally, the NYSASN board is grieving the passing of our secretary, colleague, and friend, Joanne Bardin. In her memory, we have collected for a scholarship to our annual conference in her honor. Details will be announced in the coming months.
We have completed 100 days of school. We have seen so many changes in those days. Thank you for all you do for the children of New York State.
