President’s Message, August, 2018

A week after attending SNO (School Nurse Orientation) as a faculty member, I can still feel the enthusiasm and excitement experienced by the 120 nurses who participated in this program. They were introduced to knowledge, skills and tools that they will use to keep students safe and enhance community wellness. As they embark on their new journey as school nurses, their goal is to feel secure in their role as they keep students safe. As they strive to apply all that they have learned they will quickly realize the difference they make in the lives of their students.

As these new school nurses grow and mature, and become seasoned in this specialty nursing practice, it is my hope that they learn to advocate for the students in their care and become actively engaged in their communities. I also hope that in the future they become involved in advancing the practice of school nursing. They may contribute to this by educating stakeholders about our role, promoting legislation, and sharing important evidence-based research. They can take this experience to educate teachers, administrators and parents on the importance of their role.

In addition to community involvement, these school nurse professionals can also become involved in NYSASN. They will have the opportunity to attend school nurse conferences and keep up to date with the latest information. I hope they soon realize the benefit of belonging to NYSASN and become actively involved in our professional association.

If you are a seasoned school nurse take the time to reach out to the new nurse in your district or a neighboring district and offer support. It is also important for seasoned nurses to remain involved and continue to feel enthused and excited about their role in school health.

NYSASN has purchased a membership software system that will be introduced in the coming months. You will be able to renew your membership online, register for SNO and Annual Conferences, change your personal data, etc.  When the membership software is available, I will send an email to notify you.

I hope to see you at the Annual Conference in Stony Brook this November. Please check the web site for the brochure and registration details, www.nysasn.org.

On behalf of NYSASN, I thank you for all you do for the students in New York State.

Wishing you a productive 2018-19 school year,

Mary Fitzpatrick BSN, RN, NCSN
President NYSASN
