President’s Message – May 2020

Celebration of National School Nurses’ Day, May 6, 2020

Dear School Nurse Colleagues,

Happy School Nurses’ Day to you! While we are celebrating our profession of school nursing with our colleagues from across the nation, we are facing the unprecedented challenge of supporting our students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrating our special day is done in a totally different way with no Zone gatherings, no dinner meetings with guest speakers, and no face to face contact with colleagues.

“Supporting Students in Times of Crisis” is the theme for this year’s National School Nurses’ Day. New York State school nurses are celebrating by following NYSASN’s mission statement: “To advance the practice of school nursing and enhance the educational success of students by promoting quality health services.” Our role may look different today, but as we plan for the future of returning to the classroom, we must play a critical role in the transition process. I encourage you to step up and be part of the district’s planning team for the re-entry into your school. Being the on-site medical professional gives you the credibility to express concerns and facts that are scientifically based. You can also provide suggestions that are vital to making your school communities healthy and safe environments.

I am proud to be your colleague and to be representing you as your president. Continue to take care of yourselves as you meet your daily challenges. Happy School Nurses’ Day!

Sincerely,

Lou Ann Gleason, MSN, RN
NYSASN President
